History

2014 – The department had a radio repeater installed in Pickerel to facilitate communication with the 911 dispatch center. This equipment was funded by the Mike Pomasl Memorial fundraiser.

2012 – The first golf outing fundraiser honoring the memory of Mike Pomasl was hosted at Quig’s Maplewood Golf Course in Pickerel, then known as the “Crocker Hills Country Club Golf Classic Scramble”, to raise money to support the Pickerel Rescue Squad. Today, the event is known as the “Mike Pomasl Memorial Golf Outing” and has generated hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations – enabling a wonderful assortment of training and equipment to help keep the community safe. 2010 – The Pearson-Pickerel Lions Club donated three Automated External Defibrillators for placement around the community.

1982 – The company was officially renamed to “Pickerel Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, Inc.” on February 25, 1982.

1974 – Founding EMS member Jim Maahs set out to start an ambulance service through the department. Maahs and one other volunteer completed a program in Wausau to become certified emergency responders and began transporting patients with a donated ambulance from Crystal Lake.

1973 – Pickerel Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. was officially incorporated on March 12, 1973

1960’s – Firefighting in Pickerel begins with three volunteers and a small truck donated by fireman Arnold Gumprecht. It had a 10 HP pump and a 300 ft hose.
