Starting off Strong

The Women’s Auxiliary for Pickerel Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad, Inc. was organized 4/23/83. It is also known as The Flames.
The Flames’ many active volunteers raised funds through bake sales, car wash, arts/crafts and rummage sale, sponsoring the lunch stand at the Old Times Baseball tournament, chili dinner, collecting CCA points through Antigo Radio station, compiling and selling a cookbook “Burnt Offerings”, and soliciting cash donations.
In addition, these ambitious Flames volunteers created the first ever Pickerel Annual Fireman’s Picnic in September 1983 and helped the Firemen with their 11th annual Tinsel Ball!
That first year, the Flames raised $1500 for the new Quick Response vehicle! ($1,500 in 1983 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $4,753.98 today).

Through 40+ years of fundraising, the Flames have helped raise untold thousands of dollars for the Pickerel Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad, Inc. to purchase needed equipment, supplies, and training.

Unwavering Dedication

Over the past 40+ years, The Flames have persevered, adding more fundraisers and events including pizza sales, wreath sales, and annual quilt raffles (yes, all handmade by the Flames!). The Flames provided raffle baskets and assistance at the Pickerel Lion’s Family Fun Days.

The Flames helped the Pomasl family start their awesome annual Mike Pomasl Memorial Golf Outing in 2012, to honor Michael Pomasl’s wish to do something special for the Pickerel Rescue Squad. We continue to support these incredible community events to do our part to raise awareness and money for the Pickerel Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad.

On-Scene Support

In addition to raising funds, The Flames have also committed to a mission to support our dedicated volunteer first responders by providing food and refreshments when they are called to an emergency such as a fire, search and rescue, etc.

As you can imagine, the food and refreshments are critical to rehabbing these hard-working people as they labor on emergency scenes in all kinds of weather at all times of the day or night. We have designated three strategically located “base kitchens”, so that when someone calls 911 to report a fire, The Flames can quickly gather to prepare food and beverages and meet the Fire Department & Rescue Squad at the scene to help make sure they are taken care of, so they can best take care of the emergency.
